In traditional Chinese families, younger generations usually live with older generations. It’s worth studying family relationships in China, particularly between grandchildren and older generations.
I also come from a traditional Chinese family, where I grew up with five people living together. My grandmother raised me, and our relationship is the closest at home. However, this intimacy gradually changes over time and distance. We rarely have any further in-depth discussions, perhaps due to my lack of patience, and her aggressive attitude towards me was also quite critical. After leaving home to study, apart from the physical distance, I found that it became increasingly difficult to understand each other psychologically.
After profoundly reflecting on our relationship, I decided to have a deep conversation with my grandmother to get to know each other and record it as a window for mutual understanding. I have chosen three themes: childhood, marriage, and death. I think these symbolise the three gradual stages of life, which are significant life events and a changing topic in my relationship with my grandmother.
RED:
For this project, I selected RED to represent my connection with my grandmother: In traditional Chinese culture, red is a festive colour that signifies blessings. It brings to mind memories of my grandmother making me a red quilt when I was a child, the red headscarf worn at marriages, and the red envelopes given during the Lunar New Year. Additionally, red represents blood, which connects me to my grandmother and my entire family. I also compare red to the flames of cremation during death. Although these flames reach incredibly high temperatures, they leave people feeling cold and sad.
Project Structure:
Procedure:
Since recording lifestyle videos was not possible due to geographical location, I used video interviews and audio recordings to document the conversation between my grandma and me accurately. I have posed nine questions under the three major themes of childhood, marriage, and death.
Then, I did all the graphic designs in Adobe Illustrator, adopting a flat style.
Finally, I built up the website on Cargo.
Final Outcome:
Final book format: 25 * 25cm bookbinding, printed on vintage vanilla paper, with white cotton and linen printed cover.
